Canary Wharf
Canary Wharf is a large business development on the Isle of Dogs, centred on the old West India Docks in the London Docklands.
Canary Wharf towers 800ft above the Isle of Dogs and contains the UK's three tallest buildings "1 Canada Square" (also known as the Canary Wharf Tower), "HSBC Tower" and the "Citigroup Centre". The magnificent glass skyscraper's were designed by Cesar Pelli and the Canary Wharf tower itself is Europe's second tallest building after Frankfurt's "Messerturm"
Canary Wharf takes its name from the fact that tomatoes and bananas were once landed here from the Canary Islands, whose name comes from the dogs (Latin canis).
Plans are currently underway for Canary Wharf to more than double in size. The number of people working in Canary Wharf is set to rise to 90,000 by 2008, and to 200,000 by 2014.
Canary Wharf Pier is located at the Canary Riverside, providing regular commuter river boat services to Greenwich, the City of London, the West End and also a shuttle service to the London Docklands Hilton in Rotherhithe.
Canary Wharf has provided stunning locations for many blockbuster films, including The World Is Not Enough, Batman Begins, Patriot Games, 28 Days Later, Johnny English and The Bourne Supremacy.
It has also appeared in many recent TV adverts and in the TV show The Apprentice. During the 1990's the tower was home to the TV station Live!TV. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canary_Wharf)
