Covent Garden

The Covent Garden Piazza is located in the geographical centre of the area and was the site of a flower, fruit and vegetable market from the 1500's until 1974, when the wholesale market relocated to New Covent Garden Market in Nine Elms.

Covent Garden has now reinvented itself as a continental style pedestrianised piazza complete with pavement cafes, market stalls and is famous for its lively shopping area with performances from street entertainers and buskers. The Covent Garden area is dominated by shopping and entertainment facilities and contains an entrance to the Royal Opera House.

The Royal Opera House is an opera house and performing arts venue in London which links the Covent Garden piazza with Bow Street. It is sometimes simply referred to as "Covent Garden" after the London neighbourhood in which it is located. The building serves as the home of the Royal Opera, the Royal Ballet and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House.

The current edifice is the third theatre on the site. The facade, foyer and auditorium date from 1858, but almost every other element of the present complex dates from a reconstruction in the 1990s. The Royal Opera House seats 2,268 people and consists of four tiers of boxes and balconies and the Amphitheatre gallery. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Covent_Garden)
